History of Mpeketoni Boys High School

Foundation & Early Years

Mpeketoni Boys High School was established in 1977 as part of the government’s effort to serve the newly settled population in Lamu County. Born from the Mpeketoni Settlement Scheme, the school aimed to become a center of academic excellence for the region.

With strong community support, it quickly evolved from a basic secondary institution into a full boarding school serving students from all over Kenya.

Growth & Academic Journey

In the early 2000s, the school’s population surpassed 900 students, and new facilities such as modern dormitories, science laboratories, and dining halls were introduced. The school embraced the CBC/CBE curriculum and was elevated to a C1 National status, joining the ranks of top Kenyan high schools.

This growth strengthened academic performance and fostered holistic development, preparing learners to excel not only in academics but also in leadership and innovation.

By 2022, the school had a boarding capacity of over 1,000 students.

Challenges & Resilience

In 2014, the school and its community faced tragedy during the Mpeketoni terror attacks. Despite the loss and fear, Mpeketoni Boys stood firm, becoming a symbol of unity, healing, and hope in the region.

Through renewed effort and leadership, it restored its programs, rebuilt community trust, and became stronger than before.

Achievements & Recognition

The school has continually improved its K.C.S.E performance and was recognized for maintaining integrity during national exams. In 2021, it won 4 awards in the Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge, showcasing the innovative spirit of its students.

It has also been a consistent performer in county and regional sports, debates, and science congresses.

Environmental & Social Impact

As part of the national “Jaza Miti” campaign, Mpeketoni Boys has actively engaged in tree planting, water conservation, and sustainability education. It collaborates with county officials and NGOs to champion youth and environmental programs.

Vision for the Future

Under the leadership of the Principal and a dynamic Board of Management, the school envisions becoming a beacon of holistic education in Kenya—producing disciplined, creative, and patriotic citizens.
